Gutter Cleaning: DIY or Call a Professional?

Clearing a bungalow's gutters yourself can be fine. For anything taller, the ladder is the real risk — and a professional clean usually finds problems you'd miss.

When DIY makes sense

If you can reach the gutters from a short, stable step-ladder — a bungalow, a single-storey extension or a porch — clearing them by hand with gloves and a scoop is a reasonable job. Always have someone hold the ladder.

When to call a professional

Falls from ladders are one of the most common causes of serious injuries at home. For two-storey houses and above, it's safer to use someone with the right equipment. A gutter vacuum with long poles lets us clear gutters from the ground, with a camera to check they're clear.

What a professional clean includes

  • Gutters fully cleared, not just the easy-to-reach parts
  • Downpipes checked and flushed
  • Waste bagged and taken away
  • Photos so you can see the result
  • A check for leaking joints and loose brackets

How often?

Once a year for most homes, ideally in late autumn. Twice a year — autumn and spring — if large trees overhang the house.
