1. Turn off the water at the stopcock
The stopcock (also called the stop tap) is usually under the kitchen sink, but it can be in a cupboard, under the stairs or near the front door. Turn it clockwise until it stops. How to find your stopcock.
2. Switch off electrics near the water
If water is reaching sockets, lights or the fuse box, switch the electricity off at the consumer unit — but only if you can reach it without standing in water.
3. Drain the system
Open all the cold taps and flush the toilets to empty the pipes. Turn off the central heating and any immersion heater.
4. Contain the water and take photos
