How it happens
Gutters are meant to carry rainwater to the downpipe and away from the house. When they're blocked, leaking at a joint or sagging, water pours down the outside wall instead. The brickwork soaks it up, and over a wet winter it works its way through to the inside.
Signs your gutters are causing damp
- Damp patches inside, high up near the ceiling on an outside wall
- Green or black streaks on the brickwork outside
- Water splashing down the wall during heavy rain
- Peeling paint or rotting wood on fascias and window frames
- Moss or plants growing out of the gutter
How to fix it
First the gutters need clearing, so water can flow. Then any leaking joints, cracked sections or sagging runs are repaired so the water goes where it should. Once the wall dries out, the damp patch inside usually stops spreading.
