Where to look
In most UK homes the internal stopcock is:
- Under the kitchen sink — the most common place
- In an airing cupboard or utility room
- Under the stairs or near the front door
- In a flat: sometimes in a hallway cupboard, bathroom or a riser cupboard outside the flat
How to turn it off
Turn it clockwise (right) until it stops. Then open a cold tap to check the water has stopped running. It's normal for a little water to dribble out as the pipes empty.
If it's stuck
Don't force it with tools — an old stopcock can snap and make the leak worse. Try a little penetrating oil and gentle pressure. If it still won't move, call a plumber and, in an emergency, your water company can turn off the supply at the outside stop tap in the pavement.
Worth replacing?
If your stopcock is stiff, leaking or impossible to reach, replacing it is a quick job and gives you peace of mind. We do this regularly — ask for a quote.
